Soda makers tend to fall into two categories. They’re either soda siphons, or small home appliances. Soda siphons attach to the mouth of a bottle and carbonate the liquid that is in the bottle. It achieves this with the use of a CO2 cartridge that you install in the siphon head.

Unlike the larger home appliances, soda siphons are easy to store, easier to clean and with less mechanical parts, there is a way smaller percentage of a chance that something could go wrong with the device. Soda siphons are best for casual seltzer or soda drinkers who want to “carbonate on-demand” without having to pull out a big appliance and set it up.

Like any product, there are a variety of manufacturers that make siphons. Here are a few of our favorites.

iSi Soda Siphon Bottle

This bottle is a great looking brushed aluminum bottle you will be happy displaying on your counter. It can also fit neatly into your refrigerator or feel right at home behind your bar.

It includes features such as a measuring tube and a pressure control valve to prevent unexpected spills. For a quality carbonator that can’t be beaten for the price, this is the unit to purchase.

While a little pricier than most, it is quite impressive in its quality and performance, 

The iSi comes with an instruction booklet you’ll want to read to get the best results, but be prepared to experiment a little to get exactly the volume and level of carbonation you like. The quality of the “fizz” isn’t too impressive unless the iSi siphon bottle is properly used. That means keeping both the iSi soda siphon and the liquid VERY COLD, and it definitely helps to give it a good shake after adding the CO2. Be sure to take these steps and the finished product will be great.

Impeccable Culinary Objects

This siphon has a 1-liter capacity, but can also be used by the pint when you’re less thirsty. It’s made of durable aluminum and comes with an illustrated instruction manual and recipe book to get you off to a quick start and give you some idea of the range of custom drinks you can create.

One downside of this siphon is that there is no pressure adjustment. It’s also slow. You use a single, entire cartridge to carbonate liquid, and it can take 15 minutes for the liquid to fully carbonate. If you don’t follow this process, it won’t dispense smoothly. That’s not a big deal if you think ahead, though. Thankfully it retains the fizziness longer than some other models.

One of the best aspects to buying a Nuvantee is that you can get replacement parts for any that eventually wear out, such as O-ring seals or CO2 charger holders, as well as a key for disassembling and removing those pieces to replace them. Keep a few of these inexpensive items on hand and you’ll never have to buy another soda siphon.
