How to Make Homemade Salsa
Salsa and chips is an all-time favorite party food. If you’re ever having a get-together, having a bowl of salsa, some guacamole, and tortilla chips out is a super easy way to feed your guests and put a smile on their faces. Plus, you can use salsa as a topping for tons of different foods. You could go to the store and buy some pre-made salsa, but nothing will ever be as genuine as homemade salsa.
Making salsa might sound like a time consuming, overly complicated way of going about serving up a bowl of this classic dip, but trust me, store-bought salsa will never be as flavorful as salsa you make on your own. Don’t believe me? Just follow the recipe below and see for yourself.
Homemade Salsa Recipe

Making salsa is not as hard as you might think. Leave yourself a good 20 minutes; that’ll be more than enough time to get your salsa made and ready to serve.
You Will Need…
- Food processor or blender
- 8 tomatoes
- ½ cup fresh cilantro
- Hot peppers of your choice and/or 1 large jalapeno
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- ½ cup chopped onion
- Lime juice
- Salt
NOTE: Your measurements of ingredients don’t have to be exact! If you want to add more spice, go ahead and cut up a few more peppers. If you want a thicker salsa, strain your salsa throughout the process.
Step 1 – Mix your ingredients. In your food processor or blender, combine all your ingredients, except your tomatoes. Once the ingredients are fully combined, you can add in your tomatoes, one at a time.
Step 2 – Taste your salsa and add in any more ingredients that you want until the flavor is perfect. If you want your salsa to be less watery, just strain out some of the liquid.

As you can see, salsa is super easy to make. As long as you can put ingredients into a blender, you can make delicious salsa! To make your salsa a little more special, garnish it with a little sprig of cilantro.
How to Make Salsa Verde

Salsa verde is a little more unusual than regular red salsa, but it’s basically just as easy to make. Salsa verde literally means ‘green salsa.’ The thing that makes salsa verde green is that it requires tomatillos rather than regular tomatoes.
You Will Need…
- Food processor or blender
- 1 pound of tomatillos
- 3 cloves of garlic
- ½ cup fresh cilantro
- Hot peppers of your choice and/or 1 large jalapeno
- ½ cup chopped onion
- Lime juice
- Salt
Step 1 – Cook your tomatillos. Before you can use your tomatillos, you have to take the papery husk off, then cook them. You can do this in one of three ways: in the oven, in a pan, or in a pot. If you choose to cook them in the oven or in a pan, cook them until they get soft and brown. If you cook them in a pot, make sure to fill the pot with enough water that the tomatillos are fully covered. Boil until they are soft.
Step 2 – Combine ingredients. In your food processor or blender, combine all of your ingredients, as well as a bit of water. If you cooked your tomatillos in a pot, use the pot water for this. Only add in about ¼-½ cup of water.
Step 3 – Taste your salsa and add in any more ingredients that you want until the flavor is perfect.
What to do With Your Salsa

Salsa goes great with so many Mexican dishes, from tacos to enchiladas to tamales. Put it in a bowl on the side, or put a scoop right on top for a perfectly spicy addition to your meal. Salsa goes great with guacamole and sour cream, too. Adding in these three things to tacos and burritos especially completely changes the game!
So, now you know that salsa is super easy to make, whether you’re making red salsa or green salsa. It is a perfect addition to any Mexican meal and/or party and is a great way to get your cooking muscles working without having to take on too big of a project. Plus, salsa-making is not an exact art; add in any extra ingredients you think would be good, such as some spices, herbs, or peppers, and make your salsa your own.
As the cherry on top, serve your salsa in a beautiful Molcajete bowl!
